The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) confirms that it will meet new Minister with responsibility for transport decarbonisation, Trudy Harrison, on 15th December 2021. MAG will confirm that, in surveys, the majority of motorcyclists oppose the proposed phase-out of internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles. MAG is committed to honestly representing the views of its members and is keen to promote a better way to meet Government targets.
MAG’s Director of Campaigns & Political Engagement, Colin Brown, has secured a meeting with Trudy Harrison on 15th December. Trudy Harrison was appointed as a Parliamentary Under-secretary for the Department of Transport (DfT) in September. Her first area of responsibility is decarbonisation of transport.
Surveys
Surveys carried out by both MAG and the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) show that an overwhelming majority of riders are opposed to the phase-out of traditionally powered motorcycles. Whilst accepting a need to consider wider environmental issues, MAG has committed to represent this view honestly and openly whilst promoting a genuine will to work proactively with the Government.
Colin Brown commented:
“I am delighted that the Minister responded so rapidly to my request for a meeting. The issue of transport decarbonisation, and the current proposals to end the sale of ICE motorcycles is a major concern for our members. MAG is opposed to these proposals.
There are many concerns that riders have about the proposed phase-out. These are legitimate concerns and need to be addressed. We honestly believe that there are better ways to move towards the Government’s net zero target. This meeting will give us the first opportunity to put forward our case.
This meeting is a vital step towards enabling us to open a positive and proactive dialogue. That will allow us to protect the interests of motorcyclists whilst also meeting the long-range targets that the Government has set.”
Stakeholder Meeting
MAG have also been invited to a bi-lateral stakeholder meeting with DfT officials on Wednesday 8th December.

“It has been very tough to gain a meaningful discussion with officials until now. I believe this is largely due to the focus of the Department on four-wheeled vehicles. This has been disappointing, and riders certainly feel that their voice has not been heard, so the potential for a better dialogue is all-important here. This is a vast and complex debate, and clearly one that should not be held without riders present.
Given the Minister’s recent comments about being an advocate for motorcycling in the Department we are really encouraged that the appointment of Trudy Harrison is indicating a more proactive attitude towards motorcycling. It is vital that we speak to Ministers as well as officials and I believe that we can now shape a fantastic new narrative for the future of motorcycling in the UK.”
